Dear friends,
|
|
As you know, the Franciscan Community of Valenzano has undertaken
the restoration of the wall paintings in the cloister,
the choir, some in the church, and the lunetta on the external
doorway.
This is a heritage of undoubtful historical, cultural, and religious values.
The restoration will be performed by Maria Gaetana di Capua,
born in Carbonara of Bari and working in Martina
Franca, in the province of Taranto. The work will be monitored by me,
Ing. Luigi Lampignano, and will be under the supervision of the
Office for the Surveillance of Artistic Monuments for the Puglia Region
(Soprintendenza ai Beni Artistici della Puglia)
that approved the plan on 9/29/1999.

The cost of the entire project is
estimated at 120,000,000£ (58,550US$) barring accidents
and there have already been some;
the cost of the restoration is estimated to run at a rate
of 660,000£ (325US$) per square meter. At the moment, the Franciscan
Community is not the recipient of any approved state funding;
requests for financial assistance have been made to the
Ministry of Cultural Assets (Ministero dei Beni Culturali),
to the city hall (Comune) of Valenzano,
to the Administration for the Province of Bari,
and to the Administration for the Puglia Region.

Private financing is needed to complement any governmental support,
and will be essential if
no financial assistance is received from these state agencies.
Funds must be raised through voluntary contributions among those
that have an interest in the preservation of this invaluable heritage
for the city of Valenzano and want to support the project.
|
|
A committee "for the restoration" has been formed for this purpose in Valenzano,
with the task of informing the citizenry, at home and abroad, about this restoration project.
|
|
I ask for your collaboration, writing as the coordinator of this
committee and as a spokesman of the entire Franciscan community.
The committee is organizing cultural initiatives where
it will promote support for the restoration adopting a
sponsorship by wall surface, with a minimum area of a square decimeter
(about 18 square inches) for 7,000£ (3.5US$) for individulas,
or for an entire painting subject for a company, an agency, an
association or whoever can afford more.
Attached below is the list of various painting subjects
and their surface area.

The entire Franciscan community asks that you participate to this event
and help with the collection of funds in the manner that you consider most appropriate.
